Tucked into an unimpressive strip mall lies Hirozen Gourmet, a Japanese restaurant that is foodie-approved and Broke-Girls-endorsed. No, the chairs were not designed by Philippe Starck, but are they clean? Yes. And while it’s not as cheap as Sushi Mac (where you can get rolls for $3!), the quality is far superior, arguably giving the Nobus and Matusihas of this city a run for their money.
Reasonably-priced, fresh and delicious sushi is a hot commodity in this town, so definitely make reservations on Friday and Saturday nights — and definitely order the soba noodles ($4.75) or the kaiseki box (tempura, sashimi, rice, miso soup, and more for $12.50).

I was already partial to this venue because of its NYC-inspired moniker and menu, but now they’ve gone and added both art and free wine to their list of reasons to heart them. Each month, West 4th/Jane will be hosting the work of a different local artist, and on the first Tuesday of every month there will be free wine to go along with the viewing and (for the more fortunate among us) buying. As if I didn’t love this package enough, it seems these New Yorkers are already starting to feel the beach, as a portion of all proceeds from artwork sales will go to Heal the Bay.

While I appreciate the fact that you can get a breakfast at IHOP or elsewhere for less than the $10 + toy donation required to receive your free breakfast at The Beachcomber this Saturday, I urge you to think of this as a 2 for 1 deal – you get ‘free’ deliciousness served in the ocean air, and a needy kid (yes, needier than you) gets to have a happy holiday. As an added bonus, you’ll get to feel good about yourself all day long (if not your waistline – brioche french toast, anyone?).
