Free Computer Programs

When it comes to spending money on my ancient laptop, 99 cent songs from iTunes are the biggest splurges we allow ourselves.  We have to say a little prayer — and then wait half an hour — just to get it to turn on every morning.  However, thanks to the generous website AlternativeTo, we luckily no longer have to put up with software that also coexisted with dinosaurs.

AlternativeTo is a database of open-source alternatives to pricy computer programs. Just type in the software you’re looking for (such as Final Cut Pro, which costs $1,299), and the site will show you a variety of substitutes (like the free, open-source editing program Avidemux).  Now if only a free new computer came with the software…
