Not Your Average V-day Dinner
There's nothing worse than trying to force romance amidst an over-priced, under-desirable prix fixe menu wherever you were actually able to get reservations on February 14th. To us, this holiday is like New Years Eve -- the more you downplay it, the better chances you have of actually enjoying yourself. So, we asked Eater LA Editor and Cork & Rind blogger Kat Odell to give us her top 5 picks for an outside-the-box, friendly-on-the-wallet Valentine's Day dinner so that you and your sweetheart can save the $95/person and put it towards a flight to Napa, or something equally (and actually) romantic.
Short Order - If you're just looking for a damn good burger served in a cozy space, I say hit up Short Order. My go-to (which for me is the best burger in Los Angeles at the moment) is Ida's, which comes with melted cheddar, pickles, tomato, onion, and secret sauce. It's kinda like In-N-Out gone gourmet. Make sure to order the "special milkshake" for dessert.
Vardo - This quaint, romantic nook hidden on Main Street in Venice is a total find. The earthy, ethnic-y space matches its flavor-packed vegetarian/vegan menu. Don't miss the raw shakes. BYOB, if you're looking to get frisky.
Le Zinque - So, you've met a new sig-o, but you're not quiet ready for a full-on romantic meal. How about light bites and good vino? Try the recently opened Le Zinque in Venice. The space itself is rustic chic with low lighting to set the mood.
800 Degrees - If you're truly on a super-tight budget but still want to score a delicious dinner, hit 800 Degrees. It's the new, customizable pizza concept opened by chef Anthony Carron, and while it might not be the most romantic restaurant in all of LA, you are sure to leave well-fed without spending big bucks. Seriously, $6 for a full margherita pizza using top-notch ingredients? Found here, and more.
Wolf in Sheep's Clothing - This is a pop-up, so take advantage while you can. Are you a fan of Gjelina and The Tasting Kitchen? If so, you will love the seasonal small plates coming out of the kitchen here in the former Capri space, which has been redecorated in hippy, shabby-chic attire.
