Celeb Stylist Theodore Leaf’s Favorite Hair Products Under $5
If you ever meet hairstylist-to-the-stars Theodore Leaf (just call 310.854.4922 for the chance), prepare to develop a major "crush." Think Brad Goreski, with scissors instead of rolling racks. The talented coiffeur was once the youngest contestant on the Bravo show "Sheer Genius", and he now splits his time between the Sally Hershberger salon and the hairstyles of the rich and famous. We asked him for some affordable, go-to hair products, and his answers blew us away (pun kinda intended) -- the following is a list of his simple favorites for under $5:
Magic-Grip Hair Pins, $3.59: This handy tool takes the place of several flimsy bobby pins. I use it to create quick top knots and other easy updos.
Suave Professionals Dry Shampoo, $3.49: I am a huge dry shampoo fan, and I have finally decided on this as my favorite. My kit is never without it! I use it to refresh a model's not-so-clean hair when I'm on a shoot. It's also an essential "day-to-night" savior! Just spray it on your roots and brush it out -- even you can't mess this up, I promise.
Chopsticks, $1.20: This easily overlooked tool is something I use all the time for sectioning hair to blow dry. It takes the place of duckbill clips that can slip, and you really only need one. Simply section, twist your hair around the chopstick, and secure. It is also great for creating an easy chignon in a pinch.
Hair Doughnut, $2.60: This odd-looking accessory is essential for creating a great updo on your own. You can do everything from a messy bun to a chic top knot. Create a ponytail where you want the bun to be and slide the doughnut over the band. Lightly tease, and then tuck the ends under the doughnut, securing with bobby pins.
Bungee Bands, $3.50: These elastics are a runway staple but also easy to use for creating your own perfect pony. Pick some up in your hair color (they come in black, brown, red, and blonde) and pull your hair back into a clean ponytail. Hook one side under the base, wrap the other around a few times, and then secure the other side.
Suave Professionals Light Hold Hairspray, $3.49: If you could only own one hairspray, this is the one. I mist this on hair before I add soft waves, spray a little at the base before teasing, and use it to tame pesky flyaways. This formula is light to the touch but really delivers a perfect hold without that sticky "too much hairspray" look.
