Best of the Broke: August
Though there are still a few days left in August, we’re assuming you’ll be mentally checked out for most of next week in anticipation of whatever end-of-summer (what summer?!?) activities you have planned for Labor Day weekend. Accordingly, we’ve decided to run our ‘Best of the Broke’ a bit early this month.
Before we begin, some of your SPAM filters hijacked yesterday’s Weekender. WTF. Please add bgg@brokegirlsguide.com to your address book to avoid missing out on the single greatest piece of literature ever distributed via email.
Also, we've selected the winner of the $1000 gift certificate to Gilt City. It's -- drumroll, please -- Stephanie Chretien! Don't worry non-winners, we have a ton of giveaways coming up in September and beyond.
And now, let’s reminisce...shall we?
This month, we taught you how to fly private -- rich old men not required, annoying Facebook photos a must.
We gave you $25, just for being our friend (we sat alone a lot in elementary school). We also gave you exclusive discounts to StyleMint & JewelMint.
We brought you recipes from Fig & Olive and Gourmet Greenleaf Chopshop, because adding egg to your ramen noodles does not make a meal ‘special.’
We sent you to Ojai (just like Reese!) and to Red Hook (Brooklyn’s hottest new neighborhood!). You've been unable to stop thinking about chocolate-dipped-key-lime-pie-on-a-stick ever since.
We had some serious help from our friends! Travel hacker extraordinaire Taryn Southern let us in on how to snag the most baller-worthy accommodations around the world, for cheap. Green Girl LA showed us where to shop vintage in LA, and even we (who know everything, obviously) actually learned something! Mar Yvette gave us her favorite foodie finds for under $5 -- we’d rather not admit how many $1.95 Beard Papa creme puffs we’ve had since. We were finally able to ‘come out’ with our secret Walmart obsession thanks to Penny Chic, who showed us how to shop stylishly from the megastore for fall. People Magazine editor Aili Nahas told us where to go when we’re on the westside, and looked adorable while doing it. The girls at Three Day Rule schooled us on how to date in LA, the sociopath-free way. Still, we operate under the assumption that all men are freaks until proven otherwise.
We crushed on local artist (and non-sociopath) Parvez Taj, and now you crush, too. Today is the last day to enter to win his artwork!
As always, we styled you each week in the cutest clothes with the lowest pricetags. Nothing like seeing something you want to buy and being able to actually buy it!
And finally, we kept you up all night on a Monday with our happy hour at Oscar’s Cerveteca. There’s a rumor we may make this a regular thing...shhh. Stay tuned for updates!
So ends our third official month as Broke Girls (unofficially, we’ve been broke forever). We thank you for your support and will now shamelessly ask that you make all of your friends sign up for our email...and follow us on Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, and Polyvore. Have a great weekend!
