This is it! Tomorrow I leave Bank of America once and for all. Who knows if I’ll find a lesser evil, but the uncertainty is better than staying with B of A, a.k.a. my abusive boyfriend.
Just thought I’d share. Bye, bye, B of A…

You know you live in LA when you think that glimpsing the Louvre in the Da Vinci Code is a cultural experience. Please, let’s change this — perhaps by attending this weekend’s international photographic art exposition, the lovely Photo LA? Send your best broke tips (anything from salons to strip clubs) to me at michelle@brokegirlsguide.com, and I’ll send my favorite tipster a free day pass — but promise me that you won’t show up and start asking around for Anne Geddes prints.
Website: www.photola.com
Dates & Times: Fri 1/15 & Sat 1/16: 11am-7pm; Sun 1/17: 11am-6pm
Regular price: $20 for a day pass; free if you email me a great tip
Location: Santa Monica Civic Center at 1855 Main St in Santa Monica

Because I have a very bad habit of incessantly poking fun at men here on Broke Girl’s Guide, I feel good about the fact that our next Girls Night Out event at the Geffen Playhouse revolves around The Female of the Species, a play that mostly makes fun of women like me. Based loosely on real events, the play stars Annette Bening as ‘Margot,’ a feminist author whose extremist viewpoints have so traumatized former student ‘Molly’ (Merrit Wever) that she’s decided to kidnap the ‘Madame Ovary’ author, shoot her, and thus rid the Earth of Margot’s dangerous housewife hatred forevermore. As the ludicrous hostage situation escalates, Margot’s daughter (Mireille Enos), son-in-law (David Arquette), publisher (Julian Sands), and other, more random victims of Margot’s feminist rantings seize the opportunity to say all the things to her they never before dared to say (as opposed to, say, freeing her). And though I personally don’t see how one could find fault with someone who has written a book entitled ‘The Complete Inconsequence of Male Sexuality,’ I’m pretty sure it will be fun to watch Margot’s ideals comically seared to the ground like so many bras before them nonetheless.
The Girls Night Out event will take place on February 18th, with a ‘Power of the Flower: 70’s Feminism Then and Now’ themed afterparty to immediately follow the show. While we won’t be burning our bras (based more on fire codes than on principle), we will be getting free makeovers from POP Beauty and taking groovy photos courtesy of LA Photobooth. Also on the agenda are complimentary Ooba Hibiscus cocktails (because you can’t have feminism without floral flavored alcohol) and treats from Chef Jaydene of Delectable Creations (of which we’ll have as many as we want, being that we’re not hemmed in by society’s size zero ideals).
Tickets, which include the show and afterparty, are $30. Call the Geffen box office at 310.208-5454 and use promotion code FSBGG30 to get yours starting today, December 22nd.
Helpful Hint: For those of you procrastinators out there, Girls Night Out tickets are the perfect holiday gift for girlfriends, moms, sisters, aunts, third cousins, and guys who like to surround themselves with women. Also, tickets are in limited supply and will sell out well before the event date, so get yours A.S.A.P.

Words cannot describe the outpouring of nerdy joy I felt upon discovering this website, which is choc-full of free audio books for your and my downloading and listening pleasure. While it saddens me that my commute — which once consisted of reading novels on the subway — now consists of that unique brand of torture known as LA traffic, these audio books have the power to bring back some of that precious reading time (as well as a refreshing distraction from shitty radio stations and assholes who can’t drive but definitely know how to honk). Armed with an iPod full of audio books, you might even be able to distract yourself from that other unique brand of torture (which many of us are forcing upon ourselves this New Year): exercise.

We wish we were still in school. At least back then $2 tequila shots and Del Taco were socially acceptable. Sigh.
Enjoy it – and these newly reduced used textbook prices – while you can, kids.

I used to be morally opposed to audio books, but these days I applaud any form of ‘reading,’ given the art of the novel appears to be a dying one. Download classics free of charge at www.audiobooks.net.

I’m obsessed with traveling, and it always really frustrates me when I can’t speak the language wherever I am in the world – nothing worse than hearing those harsh, American-accented, English words coming slowly out of your mouth in a country where English is not the native language. However, language lessons are so expensive! Everyone recommends Rosetta Stone, but who can afford it? In preparation for an imminent return to my favorite place on Earth – Brazil – I’m going to try taking Portuguese lessons on Busuu.com. Though I haven’t started yet, I did take the virtual tour, which kind of made me feel like I was playing an Internationally-themed version of Super Mario Bros. Fun and free? Sign me up.

I meant to post this last week, but I probably had too many martinis at some point and forgot. Every Thursday, the Wilshire Restaurant offers $1 martinis from 10-11pm. I feel like this offer is so L.A. – drink as much as you can for an hour and be home in bed, wasted, by midnight.

Catch the head of the DNC tonight at Book Soup as he presents his new book on healthcare entitled, “Howard Dean’s Prescription For Real Health Care Reform.” Sounds a little boring, sure, but you never know what heights the yowler might meet someday (or what strange noises he might make tonight), so he’s probably worth a stop by. At the very least it’s always good to get some policy insight before you head out for the night. Not that anyone in Los Angeles is going to ask you about politics, but spouting off your newfound knowledge might be an easy way to get rid of the douchebags who hit on you. Just a thought.
