Join the Broke Girl’s Guide Team for P.A.M.’s Run

Posted on January 21st, 2010 by Erin in Go Out, Live Long, Right Now, Speak Up, Stay Fit

pams runBecause I haven’t liked Valentine’s Day since it ceased to involve placing Aladdin themed paper valentines into shoebox mail slots, I am more than happy to give over the silly holiday to a cause that actually has meaning. My very good friend started P.A.M.’s run last year with her sister to raise money for pancreatic cancer research in honor of their mother, Pam, who lost her life to the disease. I plan to run the 10k this year, and have started a Broke Girl’s Guide team for those of you who would like to join. The event will be held on February 13th (so you can technically spend all of the 14th in loversville with your lover, if you so prefer, blah blah blah) in Westlake Village. Register here (click ‘join a team,’ and then select Broke Girl’s Guide) to do something fun and worthwhile with your long, otherwise commercialized on so many levels (president’s day?) holiday weekend.

Something Important, For Once…

Posted on January 15th, 2010 by Erin in Right Now, Speak Up

haiti reliefI’m sure that when the big quake hits LA, Pat Robertson will call it cosmic retribution for our incessant bragging about the lovely Los Angeles weather.  Most sane people, however, do not believe in cosmic retribution, and can therefore see that it was only a matter of chance that this 7.0 hit Haiti and not us here in Los Angeles.  With that in mind, I urge even the brokest of brokettes to donate something – here is a great list of relief organizations accepting money now, courtesy of KCRW.

I would also like to take a minute to address the ‘Move Your Money’ campaign started by Arianna Huffington this week.  As you know, I hate Bank of America.  We’ve had a nasty relationship over the past ten years, one in which they do whatever it is they want to me, and I, well, take it (though not without angrily hanging up on the heartless drones they brainwash into not caring about their customers).  I’ve been planning to switch banks for some time but I, like many of you, I’d imagine, can’t really seem to figure out who is the lesser evil in the banking world.  Luckily, the movement has created a search tool that will aid in the quest to find a safe and happy home for your money.
